Description

After more compliments and good vibes—and even an award from the Independent Publishers Association—than I can count, I knew I had to find a way to re-publish my Grateful Dead photo memoir, Alive with the Dead:  A Fly on the Wall with a Camera, after every last copy sold out.  And along came Last Gasp Press (R. Crumb, among others).

Alive is a hard cover coffee table book of 256 pages with close to 500 of Susana Millman’s best photos, shot from an insider perspective.  It documents the band’s life and times onstage, offstage, and backstage, from the ‘80s through the present, and features a foreword by Mickey Hart and commentary by Dennis McNally.

Content of the two editions is identical with the exception of images of Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow that reflect changes in the Grateful Dead universe in the past three years.

Special Offer!   $70  book +  bonus signed 8.5 x 11 print of Jerry (your choice of 3 different images) and free shipping.

  1. Michael Parrish

The latest, and one of the best, is by Bay Area photographer Susana Millman who, along with her husband, author and publicist Dennis McNally, was part of the band’s inner circle from the mid-1980s. Since that time, Millman has been one of the most successful photojournalists at capturing the human side of the band members, crew, and family that make up the complex and ever-evolving society that was – and in many ways still is – the Grateful Dead

  2. Sandy Weinmann – 90.1 KPFT Houston & DEADbEAT

Alive with the Dead – A Fly on the Wall With a Camera is so much more than a photo essay on the Grateful Dead. For starters, the book itself is constructed with materials beyond description; its look and feel is that of a volume that will be in one’s library for a long time to come. The photos bring to life intimate moments that are so unique. You get to understand more than a moment – you are part of a mind set captured in a picture… Its often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words scribed by “The Scribe,” Dennis McNally, that fill the pages in between further enhance that journey inside a frozen moment. The book is the definitive look at the Grateful Dead community formed by those closest to the ultimate force created by the band; love. Susana Millman knocked this one out the park!

I just got my books, OMG, they are gorgeous! What a masterpiece, and you know I KNOW what I’m talking about in the music photography department after working with Jim Marshall and the JMP Estate over the course of nearly 20 years.

  8. Bill Walton – Athlete, Media Star, World’s Tallest DeadHead

ALIVE WITH THE DEAD is a deluxe and celebratory package of joy, happiness, and the highs and lows of life with the Grateful Dead, on and off the stage. It’s the collector’s edition story in vibrant pictures and delectable text of the people, places, things and events that mean everything to us—to this day, and forever more.

  9. Bob Bralove – Grateful Dead MIDI Engineer and Sound Wizard

Susana Millman combines the keen eye of an artist, the sophistication of an insider, and the passion of a fan in her book ”Alive with the Dead / A Fly on the Wall with a Camera.” If you were part of the scene, you will quickly see the authenticity of her images. Shot with a unique access and perspective, her photos capture the light of a world we were so lucky to be a part of.
